If you’re looking for a relaxing weekend getaway along the southern coast of Washington, consider visiting Westport! This beachy town is located in Grey’s Harbour County, about 2.5 hours southwest of Seattle, Washington.

Westport is known for its clamming and fishing industry, which is reflected in the art throughout the city and its surroundings. Many of the sculptures in the area are nods to the razor clams that attract crowds of people every year.

There are 45 miles of Washington coast along Westport to explore, so if you’re looking for long walks on the beach, an ice cream, and a delicious wine tasting, book a quaint beach bungalow and explore Westport.

Why should you read this blog? Hi! My name is Sarah, and I have been exploring Washington State since I moved here in 2018. There are so many unique cities, I’ve enjoyed creating weekend itineraries for myself and others to get the most out of this beautiful state!

Westport Marina

If you want a variety of recreational activities, you should go to Ocean Shores. If you want jaw-dropping views of the coast, visit Long Beach.

One of the things I love most about Westport is that while there are plenty of things to do, you don’t have to do anything at all. Sitting on the sand dunes and enjoying a beautiful sunset makes visiting Westport worth the trip.

What to Pack for Westport, WA

Westport is a casual, beach city on the Pacific Coast. Your visit to the area will likely revolve around fishing, clamming, and beaching.

Here are my go-to items for beach vacations:

If you need to purchase gear for clamming, check out Englund Marine and Industrial Supply Company in Westport.

Go Razor Clamming

Razor Clamming at low tide in Westport Washington

Grays Harbor, where Westport is located, is best known for its razor clams. Leading into town and throughout town, you can actually see plenty of artwork and sculptures that pay tribute to the razor clam. On the beach, you will find the shells of razor clams along the shore.

After grabbing your clamming gear from Englund you’ll head out to the beach an hour before the lowest tide of the day to optimize the time you can spend clamming. Look for small air pockets in the sand that indicate something is buried in the sand there. Razor clams can be found buried 6 inches deep in the sand.

As you collect clams, place them in a bucket and transfer them into a cooler full of ice for the ride home.

If you’ve never been clamming before, identify large groups of people on the beach. I promise there are enough to go around.

Visit Westport Light State Park

Westport Lighthouse in Westport Light State Park

Located in Grays Harbor Light State Park, you can climb up the Grays Harbor Lighthouse for uninhibited views of the area. The Westport Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Washington State at 107 feet tall.

You can take a tour of the lighthouse with Westport South Beach Historical Society for $5 and climb the 135 feet to the top.

After climbing up the lighthouse, you can enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk to the beach. On the beach there is over 1,200 feet of shoreline for you to walk, crab, clam, and fish! Since this is a Washington State Park, you will need to have a Discover Pass to access the park. Discover Passes are $30 annually, and you can purchase your pass ahead of time here.

Charter a Fishing Boat

Westport is known for its world-class fishing opportunities for Salmon, Halibut, Rockfish, Ling Cod, and Albacore Tuna. The specific dates and bag limits for offshore fishing are here.

If you want to charter one of the fishing companies to take you out on the open water, they will know what type of fish can be caught on any given day based on the season and state regulations. If there is a particular type of fish you are hoping to catch with a charter company, they can help you plan a good day.

Gold Rush Charters offers fantastic 1-day charter opportunities with Captains Ben Overmars and Kevin Vasereno. Check out their fishing schedule here!

Some other fishing boat charters in West Port include High Life Charter Fishing and Deep Sea Sportfishing.

Visit the Westport Maritime Museum

Located in downtown Westport, the Maritime Museum is a great, historical activity. You will want to plan for at least an hour long visit, but you can absolutely spend more time there! The museum explores the maritime history of the South Beach.

Their outdoor whale house buildings highlight the marine mammals found in the Puget Sound, including minke whales, crabs, and sharks.

The museum is inside the former Coast Guard Station, where you can learn about the maritime history of the area, the Coast Guard, local shipwrecks, and the fishing industry.

The visiting hours are limited, so check their hours before your visit to ensure they are open.

Go Wine Tasting

You’ve got a couple of options for wine tasting in Westport.

In downtown Westport, you can stop in at Westhaven Wines, where you can grab a wine flight and charcuterie board. Westhave Wines has an outdoor patio that is dog-friendly.

Westport Winery is located on the Westport Winery Garden Resort grounds along with the Ocean’s Daughter Distillery and the Sea Glass Grill.

The winery offers $10 tastings, which can be waived if purchasing a full bottle of wine from the collection.

After doing a tasting at the Westport Winery, I would encourage you to walk the garden grounds on the property. They’re beautiful!

Walk the Fisherman’s Boardwalk

Westport Boardwalk

The fisherman’s boardwalk is a popular spot for onshore fishing. Located on the salty water of the harbor, you will find plenty of spots to cast your line.

This is one of my favorite places to catch the sunset in Westport.

You can also head over to the Westport Marina to walk the docks. It is the largest marina and the oldest working marina in the area.

Visit the Westport Lookout Tower

At the end of the shopping district of Westport, you will find the Westport Lookout Tower. This four-story structure is right off the beach, providing excellent views of the Pacific Ocean, Westport Marina, and downtown Westport. The Westport viewing tower is a great place to watch the high tides of the winter king tide.

Ride the Waves on the Beach

Westport is one of the best surfing destinations along the Cascadia Coast. The city of Westport has a good number of Surf Shops where you can rent a surfboard and wetsuit for the day or week. Two options for renting surfing gear in Westport include: The LOGE and The Surf Shop.

There are three areas where people typically go for catching a wave, ranging from Beginner-Friendly to Advanced in difficulty: The Jetty, The Cove, and The Groins.

Fire on the Beach

Did you know that you can drive on the beach? It is used as a highway during low tide!

If you’re visiting, you will likely be spending most of your time on the beach. But there is nothing quite like staying until sunset so you can roast marshmallows on the beach.

Before having a beach fire, consider the following regulations.

  1. Check Regulations: Make sure you can have a fire in the area, and if fire rings are required.
  2. Fire Location: Ensure your fire is protected from flammable materials like grasses, brush, and buildings.
  3. Tide Location: The ideal location for a fire is below the high tide line.
  4. Wood: Use dry firewood and wood from the area where your fire will be.
  5. Extinguish Completely: Before leaving, make sure that the fire burn area is cold to the touch, so bring water with you.

Otherwise, have the best time enjoying the cool, salty air!

Go Shopping in Downtown Westport

A home goods shop in Westport Washington

The downtown Westport area along the marina has a bunch of shops and local restaurants. IT is the ideal place to find Choskies and gifts. There are a few ice cream shops, a candy shop, an antique shop, and boutiques.

You’ll find art from regional artists in the Pacific Northwest.

Visit the International Mermaid Museum

Enjoying the International Mermaid Museum in Westport

If you’re looking for something a little quirky but worth the visit, consider the International Mermaid Museum in Aberdeen. This museum is filled with mermaid lore and ocean ecology.

While you walk through the museum, there are large signs with information on mermaid mythology from around the world that is paired with information about the flora and fauna of the ocean.

The eclectic mermaid collection costs $3 per person.

Grab a Beer at Blackbird Brewing

Pizza and Beer from Blackbird's Brewing Company

Blackbird Brewing has two locations, the main Brewery in Downtown Westport and a Taphouse. Keeping with the theme of Westport, this pirate themed brewery offers a variety of craft beers and pub snacks.

The taphouse offers pizzas! A couple sitting next to us said it was their favorite pizza in the area so we needed to try it. We ordered the BBQ Chicken pizza and it was delicious.

Blackbird’s Brewing Company is a great place to stop after a warm day spent on the beach.

Check out their beers here!

Head to a Washington State Park

Sign for Bottle Beach State Park

You’ll pass a few Washington State Parks as you drive into Westport.

One of my favorites is Bottle Beach State Park, which has an interesting history of battling coastal erosion. They used car tires to minimize erosion before they realized the car tire residue was causing health problems for the local salmon population. They’ve since worked on removing the tires!

There is also Twin Harbors State Park and Grayland Beach State Park which offer excellent beach access and shore combing.

One of my all-time favorite State Parks in Washington, Leadbetter Point is just south of Westport.

Whether you plan on staying in Westport, WA for a night or a weekend, there are some fantastic vacation rentals available. My favorite place to stay is at this Beach Bungalo located between Westport and Grayland, look at it here.

“Uninterrupted Pacific Ocean Views”

woman standing on a porch drinking a glass of wine.

While this beach stay does not have a super catchy name, it does not need one. We stayed here for three nights in June 2025 and it was the perfect, private stay.

Just a short walk to the beach, we spent many hours walking the beach, sitting in the sand, and having evening fires before returning to the cozy home for a glass of wine.

Our dog, Meatball, loved every minute in the home, but especially loved the aerial view that the large patio provided.

You can book this stay here!

LOGE Westport

This beachy little hotel has all the needed amenities for a stay in the beach town of Westport, WA. The remodeled INN offers surf rentals, has an on-site coffeeshop, a dog cleaning station, and a swedish spa.

You can choose from a variety of room types, but they also have RV spots and tent pads.

At the end of the night, you can grab a s’more kit and a beer from their on-site bar and enjoy the salty air of Westport.

There is a reason why LOGE is my favorite hotel pick when I am travelling, it is because they have EVERYTHING.
